DuckDuckGo rolls out AI-powered image editing on Duck.ai

After adding image generation to Duck.ai late last year, DuckDuckGo is now rolling out image editing capabilities for its private AI chatbot. Here’s how it works.

Privacy-first approach to AI-powered image editing

DuckDuckGo announced today that Duck.ai, its private chatbot interface, can now edit images based on user prompts, for free, with no account needed. However, DuckDuckGo subscribers get higher daily limits.

With the feature, users can now select New Image from the side menu, and either click the Start with an image button or simply drag an image (JPEG, JPG, PNG, or WebP) into the prompt box. From there, they can describe the adjustments they’d like to see in the image, and OpenAI’s underlying model will take it from there.

As with the image generation tool, DuckDuckGo notes that all image metadata, as well as the user’s IP address, is removed before the prompt is shared with OpenAI, which provides the underlying model. 9to5Mac asked DuckDuckGo if resulting images are labeled with C2PA-compliant metadata, and will update this post once we hear back.

In any case, another privacy-friendly touch, according to DuckDuckGo, is that “uploaded images are stored locally on your device,” further ensuring user privacy.

Finally, DuckDuckGo reminds users that Duck.ai is a separate platform from the main DuckDuckGo search tool, and even so, for users who don’t feel comfortable with (or just don’t want to use) AI in association with their search habits, can access an AI-free search interface at noai.duckduckgo.com.

Recently, DuckDuckGo ran a poll that found an overwhelming majority of respondents don’t want AI features added to their search tools. In response, the company has been going out of its way to stress that every AI-related feature is optional, while sticking to its privacy-first approach with any new tool or rollout, like today’s.
